I used a free general dating site for a while and really struggled to find people who shared my interests – reading and music, both common pastimes. For people with more obscure hobbies, finding a good match is even harder, unless they use a niche site.

Niche sites such as Cycling Singles tend to have far fewer users than general sites, and as everyone has something in common, they can have a much friendlier feel than the huge free sites.
You can be on several
You may have several specific things you’re looking for, so why not join one site for each of them? For example, a single Muslim man who likes classical music and has several pets could be on a dating site for each of these three characteristics. If he saw the same person on all three, he could be pretty sure they’d be a good match.
It’s safer
On pay-to-use sites, everyone has to enter their bank details, which acts as a handy security tool, as the site can trace people. Most niche sites are paid for. And if you don’t feel you can trust an obscure site, you could try the niche areas within the mainstream, such as the eHarmony dating site, which is for singles looking for long-term relationships.

There are niche sites for all the major criteria – religion, age, ethnicity and level of interest in Star Trek. Thousands of small sites cater for more obscure hobbies and passions. So, whatever your niche, within reason, you should be able to find a dating site for it. Some things are still not catered for, though. I was completely unable to find dating sites for:

- People who like to feed the ducks at the pond
- Stamp collectors
- People with carrot phobia
- Fans of Barry Manilow

On theatlasphere.com, fans of Ayn Rand, her long novels and her objectivist philosophy of self-interest and free-market capitalism can meet, chat and date. Sadly, I’ve not been able to find dating sites for other philosophical movements, such as existentialism, logical positivism, confucianism, or deconstructivism.

Saladmatch.com is run by the Just Salad food chain, and matches couples based on the ingredients they like in their salad.
Sea Captains
Seacaptaindate.com is not quite as exclusive as it sounds – you don’t actually have to hold the naval rank of Captain. The site is for ‘men and women who share a love of the ocean’, and uses the slogan ’Find your first mate’.
Star Trek
Trekpassions.com tells users to ‘Love long and prosper’. It also caters for general sci-fi fans, with individual groups for fans of Dr Who, Red Dwarf, Isaac Asimov and much more.

It was Harry F. Klemfuss of Young & Rubicam (a marketing agency) who realized the tremendous importance of secretaries. Together with the National Secretaries Association (now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals or IAAP), Klemfuss created Secretaries Day in 1952. The first period of the secular unofficial holiday was first proclaimed by the U.S. Secretaty of Commerce, Charles Sawyer, and named it “National Secretaries Week.” It was held on June 1-7 in 1952, with Wednesday, June 4, appointed as National Secretaries Day.
In 1955 however, the date of National Secretaries Week was changed to the last full week of April, Wednesday being Secretaries Day. Eventually, the name of the event was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981. In 2001, Administrative Professionals Week because its new name in order to cover the wider responsibilities and job-descriptions of administrative support staff, widely acknowledged as “secretaries”. This year (2008), the Administrative Professionals’ Day will be celebrated on April 23.
